Saving Lives in the South China Sea with Taiwan’s Navy

Halifax, NS – September 6, 2024 – MetOcean Telematics, a global leader in innovative telematics solutions, is pleased to announce the successful shipment of approximately 500 Iridium Self Locating Datum Marker Buoys (iSLDMBs) to the Republic of China Navy (ROCN). These state-of-the-art buoys will play a critical role in supporting the ROCN’s maritime Search and Rescue (SAR) operations, providing real-time data to enhance the effectiveness of their efforts across Taiwan’s extensive maritime territory.

The iSLDMBs, designed and manufactured by MetOcean, are rugged, compact, and compliant with NATO A-size specifications. Engineered to meet the stringent demands of coast guards around the world, the buoys feature an Iridium bi-directional satellite transmitter, GPS receiver, and a sea surface temperature sensor, enabling them to transmit vital information in real-time. Their robust design allows for deployment from various platforms, including water vessels, helicopters, and aircraft, making them indispensable tools in high-stakes SAR missions.

“We are honored to partner with Taiwan’s Navy to enhance their search and rescue capabilities, and delighted to see the commencement of their iSLDMB program for years to come,” said Tony Chedrawy, CEO of MetOcean Telematics. “Our iSLDMBs are designed to provide reliable and accurate data under the most challenging conditions, and we are confident that they will significantly contribute to the CGA’s mission of protecting Taiwan’s maritime territory.”

The ROCN is responsible for safeguarding Taiwan’s coastline and surrounding waters, operates under a complex structure that includes the Maritime Patrol Directorate General and the Coastal Patrol Directorate General. The deployment of these iSLDMBs will enhance the ROCN’s ability to respond swiftly and effectively to maritime incidents, ensuring the safety of Taiwan’s coastal and offshore areas.
