Government of CANADA supports Iridium Scoring System
Dartmouth, NS, Canada (April 18, 2019) MetOcean Telematics awarded contract through the Build in Canada Innovation Program (BCIP) to deliver next-generation gunfire scoring and simulation system, equipped with over-the-horizon Iridium satellite telemetry to the Royal Canadian Navy (RCN).
The Mobile Acoustic Scoring System (MASS) is a free-floating, acoustic buoy system that MetOcean Telematics developed to enable warships to undertake self-conducted Naval Surface Fire Support (NSFS) or Naval Gunfire Scoring & Simulation (NGSS) training exercises. The free-floating system consists of a set of operation buoys, which report acoustic event data, point of impact, and precise time. The acoustic event data is sent to a base station receiver using over-the-horizon Iridium satellite telemetry instead of UHF line-of-sight radio, this allows MASS to measure indirect fire. Real-time results can be viewed and analyzed both on-ship and at land-based command posts. The entire system is portable, can be easily handled by two personnel, and replaces traditional land-based live fire bombardment ranges. The existing MASS system extends gunfire exercises to 20+ km; whereas the Iridium enabled MASS system can be used simultaneously, allowing both line of sight radio and virtually worldwide communications via Iridium Satellite.
