Building resilient & critical weather monitoring through collaboration
Partnering to deliver a smarter, more resilient monitoring system
A persistent challenge across the environmental monitoring industry is the reliable collection and transmission of weather data from remote locations exposed to harsh conditions. Traditional monitoring systems often rely on terrestrial networks or manual data retrieval. These approaches can cause delays, increase operational risk, and lead to costly caps in critical data.
To address this, Western Weather Group (WWG) and MetOcean Telematics® (MetOcean) have joined forces, with the support of Campbell Scientific, to deliver fully integrated, end-to-end satellite solutions for remote weather monitoring operations.
At the core of this collaborations is a unified system that enables:
- Continuous weather data collection in remote field deployments where cellular or wired infrastructure is unavailable or unreliable
- Near real-time satellite transmission, improving situational awareness and supporting safe operational planning
- Reduced maintenance visits and downtime through optimized low-power system design and expert technical support
- Reliable, secure data delivery for critical applications
Instead of requiring end users to assemble separate components on their own, this partnership provides a fully integrated weather monitoring solution; one designed, built, and supported as a single, cohesive ecosystem.
The power of collaboration
The success of this initiative is rooted in deep technical integration. WWG, MetOcean, and Campbell Scientific worked closely together to fully integrate their system components, achieving seamless inter-device communication between the Campbell Scientific data logger, MetOcean’s purpose-built Iridium® satellite modem, and WWG’s weather monitoring system. This required the development of customized communication protocols to ensure reliable, end-to-end data transmission, and the result is more than just a successful integration. It is a transformative step forward for the industry, establishing a new standard for fully integrated, resilient weather monitoring solutions in remote environments.
Each organization plays a critical role:
Western Weather Group
Wester Weather Group leads weather station design, field deployment strategy, and the integration of sensor and connectivity components. With multiple station configurations available, WWG ensures installations are engineered for durability, accuracy, and long-term performance for clients across utilities, agriculture, and other critical sectors. Their field expertise ensures that every deployment meets rigorous measurement and reliability standards.
MetOcean Telematics®
MetOcean provides global L-band satellite connectivity through the Iridium® network, enabled by the STREAM+ satellite modem integrated directly within the weather station. This allows for low-latency data transmission anywhere in the world, serving as either a primary or failover communication path. The result is secure, reliable delivery of remote weather data to end-user platforms.
Campbell Scientific
Campbell Scientific supplies the CR1000Xe data logger, delivering reliable sensor integrations, intelligent power management, and long-term autonomous operation. Known for proven performance in extreme conditions, the CR1000Xe serves as the operational backbone of the system.
Deployment update: Scaling across the southern U.S.
The partnership has already gained significant traction in the field.
- Active units: ~700 deployments
- Deployment region: Southwestern United States
- Primary use cases: Initial rollout has focused on utility-sector applications and wildfire response in high risk areas
These deployments address a key industry gap, demonstrating that reliable low-power satellite communication can replace or support legacy solutions without sacrificing performance.

Measurable performance improvements
Compared to WWG’s previous satellite solution, the STREAM+ integration delivers meaningful gains:
- Transmission Frequency: Data transmitted every 10 minutes under normal operations, with ongoing efforts toward near real-time transmission
- Latency: Messages typically delivered and processed in under one minute
- Power Consumption: Approximately one tenth of the power usage of the previous solution
- Battery Endurance: Improved from ten days to nearly one month on a 52 Ah battery during outages or low-solar conditions
These improvements have resulted in fewer maintenance visits, longer autonomous operation during extreme weather events, and greater reliability when connectivity is critical.
Built-in redundancy and modern data architecture
The combined solution supports dual communications setups using cellular and satellite, enabling automatic failover during network outages. This redundancy is essential for weather monitoring operations where uninterrupted data flow is critical.
Additionally, the system is compatible with Azure-based data platforms and Iridium’s Messaging Transport Service, enabling efficient, low-bandwidth messaging for remote deployments.
Looking ahead
With nearly 700 active units and deployment momentum accelerating, this partnership demonstrates how integrated satellite connectivity can transform remote weather data collection.
As adoption continues to grow, the collaboration between MetOcean. WWG, and Campbell Scientific remains focused on long-term operational resilience and scalable performance.
Together, our teams are not just closing the connectivity gap; we are redefining what reliable remote monitoring looks like.
