Manager, Mechanical Engineering | Dartmouth

About the Role
Reporting to the Vice President of Engineering, the Manager, Mechanical Engineering will lead the mechanical engineering team to deliver component, product and system designs that are innovative and cost effective, as well as manage the development and improvement of engineering processes, tools, and capability.  The mechanical engineering team is responsible for on-time delivery of quality products while ensuring that customer requirements are met.  You will be hands on and lead all mechanical engineering activities including requirements solicitation and generation, design to requirements, testing, verification & validation, and acceptance testing, as well as be the engineering department lead for configuration management.

MetOcean products are centered around embedded devices which are integrated into systems and protected by mechanical housings.  We are highly reliant on high-quality and reliable mechanical designs.  A solid background in new product development and experience in leading designs through the complete system engineering lifecycle is key to this role.

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Leading by example, you will manage a small, growing team of Mechanical Engineers and Technologists, establishing the team’s core processes and best practices
  • Accountable for the delivery of mechanical designs to scope, budget, and schedule
  • Use SolidWorks to incorporate PCBAs, machined components, injection-molded plastics, and 3D Printed parts, with considerations for cost, mechanical integrity, manufacturability, and assembly
  • Perform mechanical tests for product verification
  • Design jigs and fixtures for manufacturing/production
  • Develop manufacturing assembly procedures and help in failure investigations
  • Create, review and update engineering documentation
  • Incorporate engineering changes into existing designs
  • Managing end-to-end mechanical engineering projects of varying size and scope
  • Lead and own mechanical design efforts against product requirements
  • Ownership of mechanical product designs from concept through production and to end of life
  • Developing and managing the mechanical environmental testing
  • Participating in and organizing the mechanical design reviews and owning the final mechanical deliverables
  • Working across multiple functional teams to ensure the most effective project outcome
  • Understanding, generating and delivering on the complete mechanical requirements for commercially available products
  • Lead configuration management for the engineering department, develop and implement best practices across engineering

What you’ll bring:

  • Degree in Mechanical Engineering or an equivalent Engineering Diploma and work experience
  • A minimum of 5 years of experience in a similar role or utilizing similar skill sets
  • Experience as mechanical engineering lead for multiple commercial and military products through entire product lifecycle
  • Knowledgeable about designing products for outdoor and rugged use, that operate in harsh marine environment
  • Experience in designing and testing marine and submersible products
  • Experience with environmental testing standards and methodology (e.g. SAE J1455, MIL-STD-810, IEC 60529)
  • Experience using product life-cycle management (PLM) software
  • Hands on mechanical aptitude and the ability to problem solve creatively
  • Strong attention to detail
  • Outstanding verbal and written communication skills
  • Experience working with outside contractors and consultants
  • Understand configuration management principles and experience implementing best practices
