Embedded Systems Engineer | Dartmouth

Location: Dartmouth, NS (Burnside)

About the Role
Reporting to the Manager, Hardware & Devices, you are responsible for the development of embedded solutions. You will design and implement embedded software and hardware from the initial requirements all the way through to production and commercial deployment using strong creative and analytical thinking. You will also assist in all phases of development, compliance testing, manufacturing testing, product ramp, and related sustaining activities.

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Conceptual design of products
  • Component selection, schematic capture, and PCB layout guidance (Altium Designer)
  • Development of embedded code in C
  • Design, develop, code, test, and debug system software
  • Participate in design reviews (code and hardware)
  • Analyze and enhance efficiency, stability, and scalability of system resources
  • Integrate and validate new product designs
  • Provide postproduction support
  • Create embedded systems requirement specifications
  • Support Regulatory and Compliance testing of products
  • Interact with cross-functional engineering teams across MetOcean for cohesive product development

What you’ll bring:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Electrical Engineering
  • 8+ years experience
  • Experience in hands-on designing, developing, and troubleshooting on embedded targets
  • Knowledge of low-power circuit design
  • Experience with USB, I2C, SPI and UART interfaces
  • Understanding of EMC/EMI principles
  • Familiarity with RF design, GPS, Bluetooth, Iridium, RF LOS and cellular an asset
  • Experience with Altium Designer is an asset
  • Solid programming experience in C
  • Proven experience in embedded systems design with preemptive, multitasking real-time operating systems
  • Familiarity with software configuration management tools, defect tracking tools, and peer review
  • Excellent knowledge of OS coding techniques, IP protocols, interfaces, and hardware subsystems
  • Working knowledge of reading schematics and component data sheets
  • Strong documentation and writing skills and excellent decision-making capabilities
  • Ability to work in a dynamic and collaborative team environment
  • Solid ability to understand direction and execute on work
  • Ability to explain technical issues to both technical and non-technical audiences
